Self-Determination and the Culinary Arts

Self-determination in the culinary arts happens when cooking activates the three overlapping motivations: autonomy (choosing what to make, how to season, when to eat), competence (mastering skills and seeing real results on the plate), and relatedness (sharing food, cooking alongside others, being appreciated). When all three are supported—choice, skill-building, and connection—the kitchen becomes a natural engine for lasting motivation and confidence.
